Dell XPS 15 OLED keyboard and touchpad
The keyboard is one of my least favorite things about this laptop; it’s unexceptional. Maybe my expectations are too high because of how damn good the rest of this notebook is, but this just doesn’t do it for me. While not particularly shallow, the keys don’t have much of a tactile click and, as a result, feel somewhat squishy.

This isn’t a deal-breaker, by any means. The keys are responsive and their low actuation force means your fingers can quickly skip from one to the next. In fact, I found myself typing faster on this XPS than on my mechanical keyboard — my fingers just weren’t as comfortable. Those with big hands will appreciate the size of this keyboard though Dell needs to be careful here — any larger and I’d struggle to reach the esc and backspace buttons without lifting my hand. Also worth pointing out is how the white backlighting against the white keycap paint can make letters and numbers difficult to see if you’re a hunt-and-peck typist.
On the 10fastfingers.com test, I typed at 118 words per minute with a 96% accuracy, both of which topped my usual 109-wpm with a 5% error rate. There is a disclaimer attached to these scores: my personal laptop of three years is an XPS 15 so my fingers are already molded to the layout.

Let me emphasize: this touchpad is enormous. My palms brushed the top of the surface when my fingers were on the home row; fortunately, the touchpad is smart enough to prevent accidental swipes. Navigating the cursor on the XPS 15 evoked the feeling of running my hands down silk curtains; the satiny glass-coated surface reacted to my rapid movements and Windows 10 gestures, like pinch-to-zoom and three-finger swipes, registered instantly.
Dell XPS 15 OLED design
This is the Porsche of laptops — elegant, refined and precision-crafted.
Before making any comparisons to the MacBook Pro, let’s set the record straight — this XPS 15 is no clone but a refinement of a design language Dell debuted years ago.

The thin slab of aluminum flaunts an attractive deck available in either soft-touch carbon fiber black or the snow-white weave on our unit. The Arctic finish has a subtle texture on the deck, and don’t worry, coatings were applied to prevent this bleached surface from collecting dirt and smudges.
If Dell did take a page from Mac, it’s with the XPS 15’s gigantic touchpad, which takes up about half the length of the deck. Flanking the keyboard are grills for two top-firing tweeters, which pair with a set of woofers to deliver excellent audio quality (more on that below). The top-firing speakers were introduced in 2020, but what hasn’t changed is the understated lid featuring a centered Dell logo in reflective dark chrome.

Dell started the thin-bezel trend years ago and it continues to do it better than any other company. Bordering the XPS 15’s 15.6-inch display are the thinnest of frames — this laptop has a true edge-to-edge panel; no chin, no forehead. Other modern features include a fingerprint sensor embedded in the keyboard and an IR camera, both enable convenient and safe login.
The XPS 15 is an ultra-thin laptop, but don’t mistake it for an ultra-lightweight model. Both the lid and undercarriage are made of solid machined aluminum, a material that gives the XPS 15 a uniquely premium aura at the expense of portability. Measuring 13.6 x 9.1 x 0.7 inches and weighing 4.3 pounds, the XPS 15 is lighter and thinner than the Asus ZenBook Pro Duo 15 (14.7 x 8.8 x 0.9 inches, 5.3 pounds) and the same size as the Razer Blade 15 Advanced Model (14 x 9.3 x 0.7 inches, 4.4 pounds). Despite having a 16-inch display, the MacBook Pro (14.1 x 9.7 x 0.6 inches, 4.3 pounds) is about as portable as the XPS 15.
What you trade in portability is gained in build quality. The XPS 15 is among the most airtight laptops I’ve reviewed. There is no flex on the keyboard or lid, you won’t find any strange hairline gaps, and the hinge is stiff without requiring too much force to rotate.
- Обычные — находятся сверху (круто, можно ставить даже на мягкую поверхность!);
Power Delivery.
Dell XPS 15 OLED review: Battery life
Sadly, the battery life on the OLED-equipped XPS 15 isn’t great. In our battery test, which sets the laptop to ceaselessly browse the web via Wi-Fi with its screen brightness set to 150 nits, our XPS 15 review unit lasted 6 hours and 58 minutes.
That’s enough to unplug and work at a coffee shop for a few hours, but it’s not good enough to let you get away with leaving the charger at home all day. In addition to the added power draw of the discrete Nvidia GPU, the high-res screen may be partly to blame, as 4K displays often drain battery faster than 1080p screens.
Other laptops of this size with lower-resolution screens have much better battery life, including the Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360 (13:30), Microsoft’s 15-inch Surface Laptop 4 (12:03), and the 16-inch Intel-powered MacBook Pro (10:55).
Sleek, Powerful, and Frosty
With a laptop this good, there’s plenty of reason to keep things mostly as they are, especially design-wise. Dell’s premium XPS models have always looked better than your average Windows laptops, but now that they all feature the same styling cues, there are few machines more likely to catch your eye, in our opinion. The XPS 15 is the midsized member of the family, positioned between the 13.4-inch XPS 13 (available in either conventional or 2-in-1 convertible varieties) and the 17-inch XPS 17.

All three models feature razor-thin display bezels and sleek chassis that are mostly free of ports and exhaust outlets. They’re available in either a muted Platinum Silver exterior finish with a black interior or an arrestingly bright Frost exterior with a white finish inside. The lid and chassis are made of aluminum, and the keyboard deck is a soft-touch carbon fiber. These materials give the XPS 15 a quality feel, though it’s not the lightest laptop at 4.3 pounds. Darker laptops (especially the common Space Gray that Apple and many other makers use) arguably look more professional than lighter-colored ones, but after using the Frost XPS 15 for a few days, I tend to think it’s the more elegant of the two options.
You can’t go wrong with either color choice, though, and fortunately Dell makes most of the other configuration options available with both colors. The base configuration combines an 11th Generation, six-core Intel Core i5-11400H processor with 8GB of memory and a 256GB solid-state drive. Those are reasonable specs for the starting price, but our review unit is better configured. While it’s significantly more expensive, it’s probably the sweet spot for most buyers, with an eight-core, 2.3GHz (4.6GHz turbo) Core i7-11800H chip, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD.

Our unit also adds a discrete GPU in the form of Nvidia’s 4GB GeForce RTX 3050 Ti. On the face of it, a gaming-ready GPU coupled with an H-series Core i7 should amount to serious power, not available in many of the XPS 15’s competitors such as the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4. In practice, however, the RTX 3050 Ti is somewhat limited by its 45-watt maximum power consumption and not your best Nvidia choice if you’re primarily looking for high-refresh gaming at native resolution. There’s no option for a more powerful GeForce RTX 3060 or RTX 3070 as there is with the larger XPS 17.
(Photo: Molly Flores)
The graphics constraints can be ascribed to by one degree or another to the XPS 15’s compact stature. Its chassis measures just 0.71 by 13.6 by 9.1 inches (HWD). The Alienware m15, the hardcore gaming equivalent to the XPS 15 in Dell’s lineup, measures 0.8 by 14.2 by 10.9 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.65 pounds. The differences aren’t great, but they’re enough to accommodate a full-power (more than 45 watts) version of the much more capable GeForce RTX 3070.
I mention the graphics issue to temper your expectations if you think the XPS 15 can double as a serious gaming rig, but in fact it can handle pretty much any other scenario you throw at it. You can even configure it with a screaming Core i9-11900H, 64GB of RAM, and a mind-boggling 8TB of solid-state storage. Doing so is wildly expensive and overkill for pretty much every application, but it’s nevertheless cool to see massive memory and storage options recently limited to mobile workstations rather than mainstream consumer laptops.

Dell XPS 15 OLED review: Audio
- Audio sounds loud and clear
- Bass lacks punch
Music sounds pretty good coming out of the XPS 15’s speakers, which kick out the jams through thin speaker cutouts located just below the keyboard deck on either side of the laptop. This helps them sound clear and loud even when you have the XPS 15 on a lap or table.
They do get loud, too; I was able to hear Marvin Gaye’s Inner City Blues playing clearly on the laptop even when I was a few rooms away and the laptop was set to 50% volume. Vocals sound warm and vibrant, while the bass in songs like Massive Attack’s Angel and Katy Perry’s Dark Horse is clear but lacks punch.
Performance and battery life: It’s the first Dell XPS 15 with RTX graphics
The model Dell sent me is far and above the base model, but it’s the one I’d say is the one you want. For all laptops, I tend to recommend 16GB RAM and 512GB of storage, and that’s what we have here. It also comes with a Core i7-11800H and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti. Other graphics options are Iris Xe integrated graphics, and an RTX 3050.
If you’re looking for a 15 inch laptop, it’s important to know what you’re going to do with it. This isn’t the case for 13 inch laptops because frankly, pretty much all 13 inch laptops use the same internals — a 15W U-series processor and integrated graphics. They’re great for productivity.
But for 15 inch laptops, there are two completely different classes of laptops. There are those that use the exact same internals as 13 inch laptops, just with bigger screens. These are thinner, lighter, and get better battery life. Then there are those that have 45W H-series processors and dedicated graphics. These are thicker and heavier, but they’re more powerful.
The Dell XPS 15 9510 fits into that latter category, and that category can range from consumer laptops to gaming PCs to mobile workstations. To me, I think the XPS 15 is the best blend of performance and portability. It’s obviously heavier than, say, a Surface Laptop 4, which uses U-series chips, but it’s designed for more of a creativity use case.
In my testing, battery life was between five (exactly on one test) and five hours 33 minutes. This was while running Windows 11 and the battery on recommended settings. As usual, it was while doing regular work. I have to say, the battery life exceeded my expectations, although 86WHr is a pretty sizeable battery. It’s just that things like the 45W processor, the dedicated GPU, and the 4K OLED display are all things that will suck down battery life.
For benchmarks, I used PCMark 8, PCMark 10, 3DMark, Geekbench, and Cinebench.

Geekbench | 1,538 / 7,514 | 1,561 / 8,775 | 1,427 / 5,524 | |
Cinebench | 1,491 / 9,399 | 1,515 / 11,652 | 1,365 / 7,115 |
When choosing devices to compare benchmark scores to, I start with relevant PCs like the last-gen XPS 15 and the current-gen XPS 17, but I also look for PCs with similar PCMark 10 scores. I was a bit surprised to be adding a mainstream HP laptop with U-series processors and integrated graphics to the list, yet here we are.
