Only One USB-C Port

As far as input and output ports are concerned, the decision to keep the Surface Laptop physically unchanged in the fourth generation is both a blessing and a curse. It’s great that the laptop has a headphone jack and a rectangular USB Type-A port, which is rapidly disappearing on competing laptops. The USB-Type-C-only nature of the XPS 15 and MacBook Pro is an obstacle for some users.

The Surface Laptop 4 also has a USB-C port. It can be used to charge the laptop if you’ve got a spare USB-C adapter that puts out at least 65 watts, and it also supports video output using an adapter or special cable. But there’s only one USB-C port, and it doesn’t support the Thunderbolt 4 interface. We typically like to see at least two USB-C ports on premium (above-$1,000) laptops, at least one of which supports Thunderbolt. Microsoft’s decision not to tweak the chassis and add a second USB-C port (or for that matter, a second USB-A) is a mark against the Surface Laptop 4.

Instead of more USB ports, the Surface Laptop 4 has a Surface Connect port. This proprietary Microsoft port can be used to attach the included magnetic power cord, which connects to an AC adapter that has its own USB Type-A port built-in. The adapter USB port, however, is only good for charging a phone or other portable device—there’s no data connection. The Surface Connect port does work with an ecosystem of pricey Microsoft peripherals, including the Surface Dock(Opens in a new window), which adds a gigabit Ethernet port, four USB 3.0 ports, and an audio output to the mix. The dock’s video output is in the form of two more USB-C connectors with DisplayPort functionality, which means you will still need an adapter or special cable to connect to most external monitors.

Wireless connections on the Surface Laptop 4 include 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) and Bluetooth 5.0. Wi-Fi performance was excellent in my testing, with strong download speeds of 50MBps or more even with just one bar of signal strength showing in the Taskbar icon.

Из всех приложения, необходимых мне для работы, запустились только Google Chrome и Telegram. Adobe тут нет вообще, потому что это 64-битные приложения.

Проблема № 2 — магазин приложений Microsoft Store. Либо тут совсем мало софта для конкретного компьютера, либо компания просто не беспокоится, что её магазин легко можно назвать помойкой.

Вы можете зайти в этот магазин и набрать в поиске «Adobe». И он вам выдаст 269 разных приложений, где хоть как-то упоминается это слово. Разработаных самой компанией Adobe только пять из них. И это, конечно же, не полноценный фотошоп.

Вы же понимаете, что я начну сравнивать Surface Pro X с iPad Pro? И можете сразу сказать, что полноценного фотошопа не было на айпэде почти восемь лет его существования. Да, не было. Зато разработчики сделали множество других крутых приложений, заменяющих Photoshop во множестве случаев. Есть ли такой же ассортимент в Microsoft Store? Нет.

Предположим, вы решили найти какое-то приложение, которое вам необходимо по работе. Вы вбиваете его название в поиске, открываете страницу с ним, нажимаете «Получить», а затем «Установить» — и тут обнаруживается, что оно несовместимо с этим компьютером! И хорошо если приложение было бесплатным, иначе вы впустую потратите деньги.

Помимо недостаточного количества приложений, у установленной тут Windows 10 есть и другая проблема: интерфейс. «Винда» в нынешнем виде вообще не предназначена для использования в режиме планшета — ей нужен курсор мышки или тачпада. Пальцами часто не попадаешь в мелкие иконки, ссылки и вот это всё. А без клавиатуры вы даже скриншот не сможете сделать — для этого надо искать приложение «Ножницы», выбирать там необходимый режим и так далее.

Интерфейс Windows 10 под сенсорное управление надо переделывать. Просто сделав сенсорный экран, не достигнуть успеха.

Выходит так, что это всё ещё ноутбук. То есть Microsoft вынуждает вас купить ещё и клавиатуру за $270. Пользоваться этим компьютером с помощью сенсорного экрана неудобно.

Стилус тут тоже бесполезен. Рисовать? Если кисть, которую вы выберете, окажется тяжёлой, то она не будет успевать за интенсивной рисовкой. Да и ПО вы, скорее всего, не найдёте. Вот, например, я попытался скачать одну из первых попавшихся рисовалок:

В общем, если вам нужен планшет для рисования, то берите iPad Pro (2018) и Pencil второго поколения. И дешевле, и лучше будет.

И ещё один момент для бомбёжки: у меня в руках экспериментальное и очень дорогое устройство. Почему мне надо платить за подписку на Microsoft Office? Но тут, конечно, можно поспорить и сказать, что в демократии у всех должны быть равные условия.

The Surface Laptop 4 looks a lot like its predecessor, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Many people will be hoping for more than this iterative update, but the tried and trusted design will still appeal to newcomers. Its stripped-back, minimalist design language still hits the spot for me personally, even if it’s beginning to look dated.

However, if you’re looking for standout design features, you’ll be disappointed. Aside from the Microsoft logo on the back, it’s hard to tell the Surface Laptop 4 apart from the wealth of other Windows laptops. That’s especially true on the generic-looking Platinum model I tested, although the Matte Black, Sandstone and Ice Blue alternatives help it stand out more.

Regardless of the colour you choose, the outside of the device won’t be your main focus. Flipping the Surface Laptop 4 open (possible using just one finger) reveals the main event – the display.

It’s available in 13.5- and 15in sizes once again, and Microsoft has stuck with the increasingly popular 3:2 aspect ratio. I’ll talk about how it performs in more detail later.

Below you’ll find a full-size keyboard, albeit without a separate number pad. It’s not quite best-in-class when it comes to laptop keyboards, but offers a good amount of travel without the loud clacky noise you’ll get with mechanical keys. I had no problems typing away on it for a full workday.

The Alcantara fabric covering remains exclusive to the smaller device. This suede-like synthetic material is also used on the Surface Pro Signature Type Covers and provides a comfortable place to rest your hands. It’s not quite as practical when it comes to accidental spillages, though. If you’re keen on more screen real estate, the 15in model’s metal finish will be very familiar.

The Surface Laptop 4 benefits from a large trackpad regardless of which model you choose. It’s satisfyingly clicky and supports all Windows gestures, but I’d still recommend connecting a Bluetooth mouse for an improved navigation experience. Microsoft’s own Surface mouse works well, but there are plenty of
alternatives.

One thing you won’t find on the Laptop 4 is a fingerprint scanner. This is disappointing on a device that most people will pay four figures for, especially when many cheaper laptops support the feature. It means you’ll have to rely on the IR-enabled Windows Hello face unlock, although this was easy to enroll and fairly reliable.

The 720p front-facing camera hasn’t received any upgrades on the Surface Laptop 4, but it maintains decent colour accuracy and does a good job with exposure. Given 1080p built-in sensors still aren’t standard, it remains one of the best laptop webcams around. Combined with dual studio mics, the video calling experience on the Laptop 4 is excellent.

Unfortunately, those three sensors are located within some fairly chunky bezels. The relatively low 80.9% screen-to-body ratio isn’t a dealbreaker, but I was hoping for a more modern design.

The Laptop 4 also benefits from a Dolby Atmos-enabled speaker system. Audio from the device delivers excellent clarity, even at high volumes, but struggles for bass. As a result, it’s generally more effective on voices than music.

Unfortunately, there’s another noise you’ll regularly hear during your time with the Surface Laptop 4 – the fans. This is a perfectly acceptable cooling method while carrying out demanding tasks, but it gets loud here even with regular everyday use. With some modern laptops offering near-silent operation, it becomes a little grating.

One area I was hoping for upgrades was ports. Microsoft’s selection of one USB-A, one USB-C and 3.5mm headphone jack is fairly typical by thin and light laptop standards, but it still means you’ll need an adapter from time to time.

Microsoft did finally embrace USB-C on the
Surface Laptop 3, but it still uses the proprietary Surface Connect port for charging. Magnetically attaching the cable is fiddly and annoying, and can get in the way if your power source is to the left of where you’re working.

Testing the Surface Laptop 4: Ryzen Performance for the Win

Performance from the Ryzen-equipped Surface Laptop 3 is slightly lacking, so it makes sense that Microsoft has focused nearly all of its Surface Laptop 4 updates on better computing performance. The Ryzen 7 4980U chip in our review unit features eight cores, 16 threads, and a base clock speed of 2.0GHz. This is a special “Microsoft Edition” Ryzen chip that you can’t find on any other laptop. It’s coupled with an integrated Radeon Graphics processor that has eight graphics cores of its own. While it’s a fourth-generation Ryzen part rather than the latest (fifth) generation, it’s still plenty powerful. With so many cores and threads, the Surface Laptop 4 stacks up well against its similarly priced competitors on our benchmark charts. These include the LG Gram 17 and the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 2-in-1, another 15-inch laptop, which features Intel’s relatively rare Iris Xe Max dedicated graphics solution.

For performance comparisons, I’m also including the MacBook Pro 16-inch and the XPS 15. Those laptops are significantly more expensive than the Surface Laptop 4 and have more powerful components in the configurations we reviewed, so you’d think they would perform better. That’s not necessarily the case, which is why I’m including them here. (See more about how we test laptops.)

From the PCMark 10 results, we can immediately see how competitive the Surface Laptop 4 is on everyday computing tasks. Anything above 4,000 represents excellent performance. Breaking 5,000 is exceedingly rare, but the Surface Laptop 4 manages to do it. The PCMark 10 test we run simulates different real-world productivity and content-creation workflows. We use it to assess overall system performance for office-centric tasks such as word processing, spreadsheet jockeying, web browsing, and videoconferencing.

PCMark 8, meanwhile, has a Storage subtest that we use to assess the speed of the system’s storage subsystem. There’s not a lot of variation here; all of the laptops score very well thanks to their speedy SSDs.

More intense workloads, such as editing videos or rendering images, aren’t necessarily what the Surface Laptop 4 is designed to do. That is exactly the type of task for which you’d buy an XPS 15 or MacBook Pro 16-Inch, however. So it’s encouraging to see the Surface Laptop 4 score similarly to these two machines despite their far higher prices.

The Surface Laptop 4 takes just 7 minutes to encode a 12-minute 4K video to 1080p using the Handbrake app, on par with the MacBook Pro, which rings up at $3,899 in the configuration we reviewed.

With a score of 1,550 on the Cinebench R15 test, its 3D rendering prowess is even better than the MacBook Pro’s, and on par with that of the $2,299 XPS 15, which employs one of Intel’s power-user H-series, not thin-laptop U series, 10th Generation «Comet Lake-H» chips.

When it comes to photo editing, the Surface Laptop 4 is no longer at the top of the pack. Both of the similarly priced competitors (the Inspiron and the Gram 17) managed to outperform it on our Adobe Photoshop test, which involves applying a series of 10 complex filters and effects to a standard JPEG test image. While the video encoding and 3D rendering tests are purely CPU exercises, Photoshop taxes a system’s resources differently, which means that laptops with more powerful components don’t always finish more quickly.

Based on these results, prospective Surface Laptop 4 shoppers who are undecided about which processor to choose should feel confident that the Ryzen-powered model delivers outsized performance for the money they’re spending. For those who want to see how the Core i7 version stacks up, we’ll update this review once we’ve had a chance to test it and compare its performance with the results you see here.

Surface Laptop 4 (15-inch) price and configurations

Now you get to choose between Intel and AMD.

Microsoft sells two versions of the 15-inch Surface Laptop 4, one with an AMD Ryzen 7 4980U CPU and another with an Intel Core i7-1185G7 CPU. Those are both available in either Platinum (silver) or Matte Black color variants.

Our AMD Ryzen 7 review unit in Matte Black costs $1,699 and comes with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. For $1,499, you can get the same Ryzen 7 CPU and 512GB of storage but with only 8GB of RAM. The cheapest model costs $1,299 and drops the storage to a 256GB SSD (sadly, it is not available in matte black).

The Intel models are slightly more expensive. The cheapest Core i7 model has 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD and costs $1,799. Only the Intel version is available with 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD but that will run you (shield your eyes!) $2,399.

Surface Laptop ‘Color’ Options: Gray or Black

The new configuration options are the only significant difference between the 15-inch Surface Laptop 4 and its third-generation predecessor. Physically, the laptops are essentially identical, which is mostly a good thing. The most noteworthy design element is the 3:2 screen orientation, a signature Surface feature that adds space for viewing more of a vertical document like a web page at the expense of horizontal space for watching a movie. More and more laptops are starting to ditch 16:9 or 16:10 widescreen displays and revert to this once-common screen ratio.

The squared-off shape of the Surface Laptop 4’s display makes the rest of the laptop appear elegantly proportioned, with less empty space on the sides of the keyboard deck compared with a widescreen laptop like the 16-inch Apple MacBook Pro. Both the MacBook Pro and the Dell XPS 15 stick with 16:9 orientations. They’re also both significantly heavier than the Surface Laptop 4, which measures 0.58 by 13.4 by 9.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.4 pounds. The XPS 15 is 0.71 by 13.6 by 9.1 inches and 4.5 pounds. The 16-inch MacBook Pro measures 0.64 by 14.1 by 9.7 inches and weighs 4.3 pounds, though it provides an additional inch of screen real estate.

The Surface Laptop 4 scores significant points for slimming down, but it’s far from the smallest or lightest big-screen laptop. The LG Gram 17 offers an even bigger screen than the Surface Laptop 4 and tips the scales at under 3 pounds, a more impressive achievement.

The 15-inch Surface Laptop 4 offers only gray or black options, lacking the Sandstone and Ice Blue liveries offered on the 13-inch model, but any color choice is welcome at all in this category. The XPS 15 also offers a choice of colors, but the MacBook Pro and most other competitors do not.

All of these laptops have excellent screens in their base configurations. After all, if screen quality isn’t one of your top priorities, there’s little reason to buy a laptop with such a large one. Microsoft’s PixelSense display in the Surface Laptop 4 is the same excellent one used in the Surface Laptop 3. With a native resolution of 2,496 by 1,664 pixels, the display isn’t quite 4K, but it has a higher-than-full-HD resolution. It nearly matches the resolution known as quad HD, which is 2,560 by 1,440 pixels on a 16:9 screen.

To my eyes, most laptops with a resolution greater than full HD (typically 1,920 by 1,080 pixels) offer equally crisp text and vivid colors. This is certainly true of the Surface Laptop 4, but Microsoft has another trick up its sleeve. The AMD Ryzen-powered version of the 15-inch laptop takes advantage of FreeSync technology for on-the-fly refresh rate adjustments, which means silky-smooth, jerk-free animations and other onscreen motions. Support for variable refresh rates is rare on mainstream laptops, though less so on gaming-focused monitors and laptops, and starting to show up on flagship phones.

The Surface Laptop 4’s display also supports HDR content, as well as 10-point touch input from either your fingers or the optional Microsoft Surface Pen.

Price & Availability

There are lots of options when it comes to Surface Laptop 4 configurations, so you might well end up paying much more than the £999/US$999.99 starting price. That entry-level variant gets you an AMD Ryzen 5 4680U processor, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, but the i7 model I tested doubles both memory and storage for £1,649/US$1,699.99.

Those cheaper models put it roughly in line with many of the
best laptops you can buy, including the
Dell XPS 13,
Huawei MateBook X Pro and
Apple’s latest M1 MacBook Air. All three of those devices bring something different to the table, but the Surface Laptop 4 is still able to hold its own.

From my time with the device, I’d say cheaper models Surface Laptop 4 are accurately priced. However, rival devices offer better value for money higher up the line, so it’s hard to justify dropping over £1,500/US$1,500 on one of these, but it still feels well future-proofed.

The 15-inch Surface Laptop 4 I tested came with an eight-core AMD Ryzen 7 processor, Radeon graphics, and 16GB of RAM. Microsoft collaborated with the chip maker in the components’ development, so they carry a Surface Edition moniker.

The powerful hardware allowed the notebook to make quick work of anything I threw at it, including an occasional StarCraft II gaming session. My workflow consists of constantly using a web browser with a double-digit number of open tabs, manipulating large image files in Affinity Photo, creating content in a text editor, collaborating with colleagues in Slack, teleconferencing via various platforms, and streaming music from Spotify. The Laptop 4 conquered it without hesitation, seamlessly switched between apps, and instantly opened new ones.

Longer battery life is one of the biggest improvements that the Surface Laptop 4 brings over the Laptop 3. According to Microsoft, the 13.5-inch AMD version can last for up to a rather impressive 19 hours of typical usage between charges, while the 15-inch model can deliver 17.5 hours’ worth of screen-on time.

While testing the 15-inch Laptop 4, I used it with the screen brightness consistently set above 50 percent. The notebook exceeded my expectations by easily making it though a long workday without charging trips.

The notebook packs impressive speakers, which are neatly embedded underneath the left and right sides of its keyboard. Spotify playlists and podcasts sounded crisp during my testing, and so did Microsoft Teams and Zoom calls. The device’s built-in microphones deliver a reliable performance, too — call participants heard me clearly and without pesky background noise.

The Laptop 4 is sleek and exceptionally crafted, with a familiar look.
Its keyboard and trackpad are excellent.
Surface Connect is the best connectivity and charging tech not involving USB-C.

The Surface Laptop 4 looks identical to the previous generation. It’s timelessly elegant and a joy to interact with, so I’m not disappointed that Microsoft went with the same design. Weighing well below three pounds with a 13.5-inch display, and under 3.5 pounds with a 15-inch screen, the Laptop 4 is insanely portable, too.

While the 15-inch model I tested is only available in black or silver, Microsoft is offering the 13.5-inch version in some fun colors with an eco-friendly, suede-like Alcantara palm rest, which adds a unique element to an already cool laptop.

Surface PCs are known for having high-quality keyboards and trackpads, and the Laptop 4 is no exception. The keyboard is slightly recessed, which keeps the keys quiet and helps with overall tactility. And the device’s glass trackpad is pinpoint-accurate and one of the best you’ll find on laptops today.

Microsoft has equipped the Laptop 4 with a robust set of connectivity features, including a USB-C and a USB-A connector, as well as Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5. Wi-Fi 6 is a welcome upgrade for the 15-inch variant—its predecessor didn’t have it, even though the 13.5-inch Surface Laptop 3 did.

However, if you want to use a third-party portable battery pack to power up the Laptop 4, you can do that, too, through the device’s USB-C connector.

В любом случае, если вам нужен лучший ноутбук класса 2-в-1 с отключаемой клавиатурой, Surface Pro все еще занимает первое место на пьедестале.
