Bottom Line
The Alienware x17 R2 is a force to be reckoned with. Thanks to the significant power of the new Intel 12th Gen processor and Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti GPU, it’s putting most challengers to shame. It’s got some of the fastest, if not the fastest transfer speeds I’ve seen on a laptop period and it’s got that funky, out-of-this-world look that the legion of fans love.
However, for $4,799, I was expecting it to win a few more rounds of our benchmarking against similarly specced systems. Plus, I really need Alienware to step its game up on the webcam front. If unquestionable power is the name of the game, check out the MSI GE76 Raider as it has nearly identical specs and longer battery life. But if vibrant views, ultra comfortable keyboards and great audio is your bag, the Alienware x17 R2 is the gaming laptop for you.

Alienware’s proprietary Cryo-Tech cooling system returns with its Element 31 thermal interface material comprised of a Gallium-Silicone matrix that according to the company, delivers a 25% improvement in thermal resistance over its predecessor. What does that mean for you? Your family jewels won’t get cook if you dare use the system in your lap.
We ran our 15-minute gaming test and measured the Alienware x17 R2 in specific spots. The touchpad registered a cool 79 degrees Fahrenheit while the center of the keyboard reached 98 degrees. The bottom of the keyboard exceeded our 95-degree comfort threshold at 115 degrees, but my lap went unscorched as I played 45 minutes of God of War.
During our regular heat test where we play a 15-minute, full HD video, the touchpad, middled of the keyboard and undercarriage stayed with in acceptable temperatures at 79, 86 and 91 degrees.

The second revision of the Alienware x17 is really made to accommodate Intel’s 12th-gen processors. You can go from the 14-core Core i7-12700H up to the 14-core Core i9-12900HK. Although I wasn’t able to test the i9 configuration, I’d be shocked if it provided much of a benefit in games, though it should provide a boost in non-gaming apps.
Otherwise, you can go from an RTX 3060 up to an RTX 3080 Ti, pack in up to 64GB of DDR5-4800 memory, and install up to 4TB of SSD storage in RAID 0. My exact configuration, which you can see in the spec table above, clocked in at $3,550 at the time it was shipped. Prices always change, especially if you’re outside of the U.S., so make sure to check prices with Alienware’s configuration page.

2022 Alienware X15 R2 and X17 R2
There should be no surprises for the X15 and X17 R2 Alienware updates, as these are hardware refreshes of the products launched in 2021, with Intel Alder Lake processors, Nvidia RTX 3070Ti or 3080Ti graphics chips, DDR5 memory, PCIe gen4 storage, and WiFi 6E connectivity.
The X15 is a very thin 15-inch laptop that can now be configured up to a Core i9-12900H processor, 64 GB of DDR5 memory, and an RTX 3080Ti 16GB chip running at up to 110W. It also gets an ample thermal module with four radiators and a vapor chamber, as well as ample intakes and output ventilation all over the chassis, allowing it to run cooler than other similarly-specced portable notebooks.
At the same time, though, this is a fairly large footprint and definitely not as compact or lightweight as a Blade or Stealth or a Zephyrus, mostly because of that advanced thermal module inside. It’s also somewhat unpractical with all the IO on the back edge, and doesn’t offer much in terms of audio quality.
The Alienware X17 R2 is an even larger and heavier full-size laptop with a 17-inch screen.
This doesn’t even try to match the Blade 17 or the Aero 17 or the Zephyrus S17 in terms of format and weight, it just further maximizes the thermal design and ups the power limits on the components, allowing for a full-power RTX 3080Ti at 165W and a powerful 12th gen Intel Core i9 implementation with this generation.
Compared to the 15-inch model, the X17 allows for upgradeable memory, includes a slightly higher-capacity battery, bigger speakers, and offers a few extra ports, such as LAN and miniDP. It can also be configured with what’s arguably the best mechanical keyboard currently available on a notebook, the CheryMX variant exclusive to this model, but a regular rubber-dome keyboard is also available if clickiness is not your style.
I’ll also add that the X17 ships with a chunkier 330W charger, required to power that hungry GPU implementation, adding up to the overall weight of the package. For what is worth, USB-C charging is supported on all sizes, though.
All in all, expect the updated Alienware X models in stores from Q1 2022. They’re most likely going to be listed at atrocious MSRP prices, but Dell tends to run sales and offers all the time, so you can end up getting a fair deal if you’re patient enough.
Normally, I’d hint towards our future reviews at the end of this preview article, but given how Dell are not interested in sending over review unit to us and how expensive these lineups are, I doubt we’ll be able to get our hands on them for a review anytime soon. The Alienware x17 R1 was a smash hit, so it’s no surprise that the R2 version sticks with the same overall design. Similar to other X-series laptops like the Alienware x14, the x17 R2 focuses on portability with a thickness of 0.84 inches at the thickest point and a maximum weight of seven pounds.
Yes, this is a 17-inch gaming laptop, so portability takes on a different definition. For a proper desktop replacement, this machine is certainly much more portable than something like the MSI GE76 Raider. You won’t be throwing it in a backpack often, though, due to the size and weight, as well as the chunky charger.
Still, I love this design, and I’m glad Alienware stuck with it. Like the Lenovo Legion 5i Pro, all of the ports are located around the back of the machine, and you have connections like Mini DisplayPort and an Ethernet jack that you don’t typically find on laptops. Alienware keeps everything decently cool as well, sticking with the Element 31 thermal paste featured in the original design and four cooling fans.

Alienware also stayed with the mechanical keyboard design it created with Cherry. The MSI GT77 Titan uses a similar keyboard, and I’m not a fan of it. It’s comfortable to type on, but there’s loud pinging and spring noise that makes long typing sessions tedious. A quality membrane keyboard like the one offered on the Razer Blade 14 is still the way to go. It’s worth noting that Alienware offers a membrane keyboard as an option, but I wasn’t able to try it out.
Although the switches aren’t my favorite, the keyboard layout is great. In particular, the Page Up and Page Down keys are additional functions on the arrow keys, and Alienware uses the extra space for full-size media keys instead.
Most laptops reserve these for the function keys on top. Alienware stuck with the same full-size keyboard design, though, leading to a smaller trackpad and no number pad. Let’s be honest, though: You should be using this machine with a gaming mouse.

I like that Alienware stuck with the same design, but the one pain point is the webcam. It’s 720p, and even with direct sunlight pouring through my windows, it produced a dark and grainy image. The speakers could use some work, too. Although they’re very loud, the increased bass resonance sometimes causes a slight rumbling on the chassis and a bit of distortion at full volume. In fairness, I never had to listen at full volume, and Alienware includes some sound profiles to customize the response.
The Alienware Command Center actually comes stocked with quite a few features, including five thermal profiles. The Balanced and Performance profiles were the most comfortable, while the Full Power preset resulted in very loud fan noise but the best performance out of all of them.
Alienware x17 display
In the past, Alienware always had panels that were gorgeous to play games on or just veg out on a movie or TV show. The x17 R2 and its 17.3-inch, 1920 x 1080 display with its 360Hz refresh rate is no different. It was all smooth frames and copious violence on God of War. My favorite area by far is Freya’s forest, where I battled a bunch of enemies amidst the gorgeous backdrop of blood red maple trees and verdant fields.
Watching the trailer for Swan Song, I marveled at how well the screen reproduced the different skin tones of actors Naomie Harris, Ace LeVere and Mahershala Ali. Each actor’s skin looked radiant while little Ace’s burnt orange leather jacket drew my eye to the center of the screen only to be caught up in the light bouncing off every soft ringlet of hair.

I was surprised to learn that at 76% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, the x17 R2 missed the 85.8% premium gaming average. Still, the result was better than the Raider’s 74.5%. However, the Strix (76.7%) and Blade 17 (83.9%) were even more vivid.
The x17 R2 really shined on our brightness test, averaging 325 nits. That’s slightly below the 328-nit category average, but the x17 R2 is a lighthouse compared to the Strix, Blade 17 and Raider which reached 280, 277 and 259 nits, respectively.
Alienware x17 R2 performance
But why stop at a shiny new GPU? The Alienware x17 R2 also has some goodies on the CPU front thanks to Intel. The notebook has one of Intel’s 12th Gen Alder Lake chips providing the multitasking oomph and it’s not to be toyed with. According to Intel, the 2.9-GHz Intel Core i9-12900HK processor with 64GB of RAM the x17 R2’s toting is 28% faster gaming performance over the chip’s predecessor, the Core i9-11900HK CPU. Take it with a grain of salt as you’ll see the biggest gains in older titles with moderate advancement in new titles. Intel’s also promising big improvements in productivity tasks.
To see how much the multitasking the Alienware could handle, I opened my usual mix of 70 Google Chrome tabs, which eventually freezes up my system forcing me to force quit and start all over. It’s a mix of Google Docs, Sheets and Slides with several tabs of Laptop Mag, Google Analytics, Tweetdeck and Google Drive in Google Chrome. And just to really push it, I had a few YouTube videos playing and a Twitch stream. The Alienware didn’t blink and I didn’t have to force quit which was a definite win for me.

On to the synthetic tests. We started with Geekbench 5.4, our overall performance test and saw the x17 R2 make 13,710, supplanting the 6,922 premium gaming laptop average. The MSI with its own Core i9-12900HK CPU came in second at 13,456 while the Strix G15 (AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX CPU) hit 7,746.
The Alienware trancoded a 4K video to 1080p in 4 minutes and 45 seconds on the Handbrake test. It’s a second behind the Raider, but still much faster than the 7:07 category average. It also smoked the Strix and Blade 17 (Intel Core i7-10875H CPU) which had times of 6:57 and 10:10, respectively.
Blink and you might miss it. The x17 R2’s pair of 2TB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSDs in RAID 0 configuration duplicated 25GB of multimedia content at a ridiculous transfer rate of 2,268.2 megabytes per second. The 1,048.9MBps premium gaming laptop average couldn’t come close to matching it and neither could any of the competitors. The MSI’s pair of 2TB NVMe PCIe Gen 4 SSDs came the closest with 1,774.5MBps while the Blade 17 (547.2MBps, 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD) and Strix G15 (340.7MBps, 512GB M.2 PCIe SSD) chocked on their dust.

Alienware x17 R2 battery life
A system this powerful has to have a weakness. And like most gaming laptops, it’s the battery life. When we ran our gaming battery test, which uses PCMark 10 script, the Alienware x17 R2 tapped out at 0:52 on battery saver mode and 0:51 on performance mode. The Raider lasted 1:30 on battery saver mode while the Strix G15 bowed out at 0:58.

We saw a bit of improvement on our traditional battery test (continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness) as the Alienware lasted 2:58 on performance mode and 3:01 on battery saver mode. Neither time was enough to surpass the 4:04 premium gaming laptop average. The MSI, Razer and Asus all had better times at 4:57, 5:58 and 10:14, respectively.

Заключение
Рассмотренная нами модель это уже второе поколение игровых ноутбуков Alienware x15, но в отличии от предшественника не несет в себе новых революционных решений. Как и раньше новинка выполнена в современном дизайне, имеет высокую производительность, отличный экран и удобную клавиатуру. Не забыл производитель и о самых последних версиях интерфейсов для подключения жаль только, что все порты теперь расположены на задней панели по центру. Гнездо для подключения LAN не предусмотрено, но зато есть классические порты Type A и слот для карт памяти и современный порт Thunderbolt 4. Качество дисплея хорошее по меркам игровых ноутбуков. Тем не менее, большинству пользователей лучше выбирать конфигурацию с QHD матрицей, так как производительность системы позволяет выставлять более высокое разрешение. Самым главным недостатком ноутбука Alienware x15 R2 можно назвать повышенный нагрев и высокий уровень шума.
Выводы
Вообще, большие 17-дюймовые ноутбуки, а Alienware M17 именно такой, не очень то и удобны в реальной жизни. К тому же часто такие ноутбуки подключают к большому монитору и тут уже размер экрана самого лэптопа не так важен. Потому лично для себя мы бы взяли версию на 15 дюймов, она куда более универсальна, у нее удобнее клавиатура. Но есть люди, которым действительно нужны именно вот такие большие ноутбуки и Alienware M17 вполне подойдет
Но важно помнить, что вам понадобятся внешние колонки или хорошие наушники, потому что звук тут далеко не лучший и вы не сможете увеличить количество оперативной памяти, если захотите. В остальном этот ноутбук отличное игровое решение, хоть и очень дорогое
И кстати, если решите купить такой, берите только в белом цвете.
