Устройства ввода
Производитель уже давно использует во многих своих ноутбуках проверенную и удобную островную клавиатуру от SteelSeries с индивидуальной RGB-подсветкой клавиш. Раскладка у клавиатуры слегка нестандартная, адаптированная больше под игры, чем под набор текста. Ход клавиш ноутбука мягкий и неглубокий, а вот отдельного цифровой блок к сожалению нет, поэтому расстояние между кнопками достаточное, чтобы избежать ошибок ввода, а заодно с комфортом играть и работать — если, конечно, вы не не ярый фанат механики и тактильного отклика. Тачпад с поддержкой драйвера Microsoft Precision достаточно крупный, размеры активной области составляют 14 х 6.5 см. Нижние углы сенсорной площадки при нажатиях уходят очень глубоко вовнутрь. В отличие от клавиатуры, встроенные клавиши при нажатии очень громко щелкают.
Дисплей и звук
Доступны три варианта дисплея: с частотой обновления 60, 240 и 300 Гц. Все три представляют собой IPS панели с FHD или UHD разрешением — сенсорных вариантов не предусмотрено. В нашем варианте установлен дисплей на основе матрицы Sharp AU Optronics B156HAN12.0 с частотой обновления 300 Гц и разрешением 1920х1080 пикселей. По сравнению с предшественником, увеличилась яркость и теперь она составляет 311 кд/м2 против 282 д/м2, контраст так же стала больше 1500:1 вместо 900: 1 у GS65 с матрицей Sharp LQ156M1JW03. New Year, New Screen: Now QHD at 240Hz
The QHD (2,560-by-1,440-pixel) screen adorning my review unit is its best asset. It offers finer detail than a full HD (1,920-by-1,080-pixel) screen, which is also offered in the GS66 Stealth with a blistering 300Hz refresh rate. (The 1080p panel will be in the GS66 models that will come available in the U.S. first.)
The QHD screen’s 240Hz is still more than high enough to handle the output from my model’s GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU, as our benchmarks will show, though. I’m also glad to see it has Nvidia G-Sync support to eliminate screen tearing while gaming. G-Sync support is uncommon even on high-end gaming laptops.
The picture quality is nothing short of fabulous, thanks to the display’s fine detail, eye-popping saturation, and high brightness. Its anti-glare surface does a good job of killing reflections, too. Gaming or doing anything else on this screen is a pleasure.

Keyboard and trackpad
MSI have redesigned the inputs from the previous GS65 generation, with a slightly different feeling keyboard and a larger clickpad.
They still stick with their annoying layout particularities, such as that big left CTRL key that sends the Fn key to the right, now squashed into the right CTRL, and cramping up what was already a cramped area around the directional keys. They’ve also included the power button as a key in the top right corner with this generation, and put an always-on red light into it that doesn’t make any sense to me. At least it’s a tiny LED, unlike on other laptops that go with lit Power keys.
On the other hand, this layout adds extra secondary functionality to the top right of the F keys compared to their previous implementation, and keeps the functions column at the right side.
As far as using this keyboard everyday, back when they launched the GS66, MSI taunted a changed and improved keyboard feedback, and as someone who got along fine with their previous design, I was worried they’d mess this up. Luckily, they haven’t, but there’s a catch.
This is right now the softest keyboard in this 15-inch niche of premium performance laptops. With 1.5 mm of travel and little effort required to register a stroke, this keyboard feels a lot like an ultrabook keyboard, so those used to stiffer inputs might have a hard time getting used to it.
I for one can see myself using this as a daily typer, though. It’s very quick and very quiet, but also rather unforgiving on any straying fingers with those soft actuations, and that took a slight toll on my typing experience. Overall, though, this is among my favorite typers in this niche.
The per-key RGB illumination carried over from the previous generations, with bright enough LEDs, good uniformity, and almost no light creeping out from under the keycaps. The design also includes physical CasLock and NumLk indicators, and MSI notebooks also offer this neat trick that only lights up the available functions when you press the FN key.
On the other hand, while still mostly functional once you understand how it works, MSI’s Steelseries Engine control software looks and feels dated, with antique graphics and minuscule, hardly usable interfaces. In fact, their entire software suite could use a complete revamp, bringing all the control options into a unified modernly designed interface.
For mouse, MSI went with a wider, but what looks to me like a shorter clickpad than on the previous generation, as a result of the narrower arm-rest and reserving most of the top-area for the thermal module. I was OK with the size and overall feel and performance of this glass implementation with Precision drivers, especially appreciating the smooth clicks and sturdy construction that prevents rattling when tapped firmer. This shorter format might be limiting with some gestures, though.
I’ve also seen some complaints of poor palm-rejection with this wider clickpad, but I haven’t noticed any glitches during my time with this sample.
As for biometrics, there’s an IR camera on the GS66, but no finger-sensor.
Noise, Heat, Connectivity, speakers, and others
The MSI GS66 Stealth gets a complex cooling design, with three fans and a multitude of heatpipes spread over the CPU, GPU and VRMs, but without a Northbridge thermal plate. On a closer look, though, most of this module is designed around the GPU, and the CPU only benefits from two rather-narrow heatpipes, which might explain those high CPU temperatures.
As an extra note, the wide-open back mesh allows proper ventilation, but dust also easily gathers inside. You can already see the dust accumulating on the heatpipes and within the fans’ blades on our sample, which is about 2-3 months old.
The fans run quietly with daily use and you won’t notice them in a regular school/work environment, but they’re always active and audible in a quiet room, even on the Silent profile. I haven’t noticed any coil winning or electronic noises on our unit.
Here’s what to expect in terms of noise, at head-level.
- Extreme Performance, fans on Cooler Boost – 52-53 dB with games;
- Extreme Performance, fans on Auto – 45-47 dB with games, 45-47 dB with Cinebench loop test;
- Silent, fans on Auto – 37-38 dB with games, 32-35 dB with daily use.
With games, the fans ramp up to only about 45-47 dB at head-level on the standard Extreme Profile, which is about average for this sort of a notebook. Ramping up the fans to their max pushes the noise to unusable 52-53 dB levels, while switching over to Silent lower the noise under 38 dB when running games, but with an increase in internal and especially external temperatures.
Speaking of, this GS66 heats-up a fair bit with longer gaming sessions.
The outer temperatures are about average. We’re looking at temperatures in the low-50s in the middle of the keyboard on the Extreme Performance profile, high-40s around the WASD area, and low-60s in certain spots on the back. The Silent profile further pushes those temperatures a fair bit, while on Cooler Boost these drop by around 5 degrees. Even so, with the WASD region in the higher 40s and still 50s in the middle of the keyboard, longer gaming sessions aren’t going to be very comfortable on this laptop, regardless of the selected profile.
Keep in mind we’ve run our tests in a controlled environment with the AC set at 24-25 degrees Celsius, so these temperatures might jump even higher in hotter rooms.

For connectivity, there’s Wireless 6 and Bluetooth 5 through an Intel AX201 chip on this unit, as well as 2.5 Gigabit Lan. Our sample performed well near the router, but then the speed and signal quality dropped at 30+ feet away with obstacles in between, so the range might be a problem here. Again, something you should once more double-check with other reviews.
Audio is handled by a pair of punchy speakers that fire through narrow cuts at the left and right side of the arm-rest. These can get loud, at about 90 dB at head-level, but the quality is tinny, lacking in both mids and lows. A pair of headphones is a must with this laptop if you care about sound quality, and overall I feel this implementation is a step-backward from the GS65.
The webcam is placed at the top of the screen flanked by microphones. The image quality isn’t much, though, choppy and washed out, so I doubt you’ll want to use this often.
Should you buy the MSI GS66 Stealth?
The GS66 Stealth is a solid effort from MSI in a competitive field. If you are a fan of MSI, then you likely won’t be disappointed with this effort.
However, with other manufacturers starting you down, you might have your head turned by the likes of the Asus ROG Zephyrus and Razer Blade 15 that stand out in other areas – portability and premium build quality respectively.
The MSI GS66 Stealth is a good upgrade from the GS65 Stealth, offering a welcome redesign and top-notch Full HD gaming performance. But pesky flaws mean the GS66 Stealth might fall short at a price point that is more fiercely competitive than ever.

Screen & Speakers
The GS66 has a 1080p display with a whopping 240Hz refresh rate. That’s a stunning figure – one of the highest available in any laptop. The Asus doesn’t offer this unless you step up to 15.6in models, and it’s not an option on the XMG at all.
The 240Hz refresh rate is designed for eSports, where faster rates mean games run at higher framerates with faster inputs without tearing or blurring. For competitive games, having a better refresh rate can deliver an advantage.
The MSI’s screen works well: fast-paced motion is smoother and crisper than on either rival, and the absence of Nvidia G-Sync doesn’t have a big impact.
Bear in mind that 144Hz screens are still easily good enough for single-player gaming and mainstream eSports – the jump between 144- and 240Hz is noticeable, but not transformative.
It’s brilliantly smooth, but only high-end players will find it essential.
The stunning refresh rate is paired with superb quality. The brightness level of 324 nits is high enough for all indoor scenarios, and the contrast ratio of 1,246:1 is a great result for an IPS display, offering ample punch and depth in dark and bright areas.
The average Delta E of 1.37 is superb, and means colours are accurate. The MSI’s display handled 95.4% of the sRGB colour gamut, which is ample for conventional gaming – although its sub-70% DCI-P3 and Adobe RGB figures mean it’s not suitable for high-gamut scenarios or colour-sensitive work.
The GS66 Stealth offers better contrast and more accurate colours than the XMG as well as its better refresh rate. Aside from the absence of G-Sync, the Stealth’s screen has no major weaknesses.
Audio gear, though, is disappointing. The speakers are loud, but bass is missing and they’re too tinny. A headset will be far better, and the Asus is notably better.
Performance

The MSI GS66 Stealth has solid components. An Intel i7-10750H processor with six cores alongside base and boost speeds of 2.6GHz and 5GHz, and the new 10th Gen architecture is bolstered by 16GB of DDR4 memory, and graphics grunt comes from an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 with 6GB of memory.

Storage is handled by a 512GB SSD that delivered superb read and write speeds of 3,349MB/s and 1,960MB/s, and the removeable base panel reveals room to add two more NVMe SSDs – perhaps helpful when the 512GB could run out of space after only a handful of game installations.
The RTX 2060 the MSI GS66 comes with is a decent gaming GPU. It zipped through our three test games at Ultra settings with framerates at 48fps or beyond, and at Low settings it played two of those games at far beyond 100fps. When the vast majority of esports games are less demanding than single-player titles, it means that you’ll easily achieve framerates beyond 200fps on this laptop – which means you can take advantage of the 240Hz screen.
The Asus also had an RTX 2060, and there’s very little between these laptops in benchmarks – the MSI GS66 Stealth was marginally quicker in games, but the Asus’ better CPU gave it a slight advantage in 3D Mark.
Intel’s latest CPU generation does deliver a decent boost over older chips, and there’s enough power here to tackle productivity tasks – for photo-editing, high-end Office software and some light video work, the Core i7 is easily capable.
The Intel chip falls behind AMD’s latest laptop parts, though. The i7-10750H scored 1,178 and 5,957 points in Geekbench 5’s single- and multi-core tests, but the newer, more capable AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS in the Asus scored 1,202 and 7,815 points. AMD’s chip opened up similar gaps in Geekbench 4 and Cinebench R2.
The MSI GS66 Stealth is an inconsistent thermal performer. There’s fan noise present during gaming, but a headset will easily handle it and it’s no worse than either rival. Heat is a more pressing issue: hot air ejected from the right-hand side that could prove irritating to people using USB mice, and the keyboard and base panel both become too warm.
Internal temperatures can be an issue – the GPU is fine, but the CPU often surges beyond 90°C and throttles to its base speed of 2.6GHz. That means the MSI GS66 Stealth isn’t particularly suitable for high-end productivity workloads.
MSI GS66 Stealth audio
Those two tiny slits on either side of the MSI GS66 Stealth’s palm rest pack quite a wallop. Boosted by Nahimic’s software, the Dynaudio 2-sided Duo speakers had no problems blanketing my living and dining rooms in clean, loud audio. The strings during the intro on Estelle’s “Stronger Than You” were sturdy and gave way to a jazzy, synthy keyboard and crisp percussion. The singer’s rich vocal, which blurred the line between alto and tenor, reigned supreme.
As I made my way to my next mission in CyberPunk, I put the pedal to the metal and enjoyed hearing my car’s turbo boost roar as I hit a straightaway. A synthy, bass-heavy bop played in the background. It was an invigorating moment that soon gave way to the staccato rhythm of an assault rifle as I reached my mission objective and went in guns blazing.
MSI GS66 Stealth heat
Little space, lots of heat. Every gaming laptop OEM is constantly fighting the battle against heat which subjects your powerful laptop to throttling thanks to overheated components. MSI’s solution is its CoolerBoost technology. It consists of seven heat pipes and three fans with 0.004-inch thin fan blades, making them the world’s thinnest sharp-edged fan design.
When we put the technology to the test, there were still some spots that exceeded our 95-degree Fahrenheit comfort threshold, but it was cooler than what we’ve seen on other systems. The touchpad, center and bottom of the Stealth measured 81, 108 and 111 degrees, respectively.
Once the system cooled off, we ran our 15-minute video streaming test and remeasured it. The touchpad hit 82 degrees while the middle of the keyboard measured 87 degrees. The laptop’s undercarriage registered 91 degrees.
Meet the GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU
The GS66 Stealth is the first laptop we’re testing with the GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU. Naturally, it’s less powerful than the desktop card, but let’s see how closely the two relate. Here’s a basic comparison versus the GeForce RTX 3080 Founders Edition.
Given the significant differences, think of the GS66 Stealth’s GeForce RTX 3080 as a distant cousin of the desktop card. It has more video memory, but it’s slower GDDR6 with a smaller interface and roughly half the bandwidth. Its boost clock is also much lower, but it’s underrated; according to the utility GPU-Z(Opens in a new window), it maintained 1,350MHz to 1,400MHz in my 3DMark Fire Strike stress testing.
Naturally, the RTX 3080 Laptop GPU consumes less power than the desktop version. Its total graphics power (TGP, often called «board power») is just 95 watts in the GS66 Stealth based on my GPU-Z logs. Nvidia says laptop makers can implement the card with up to a 150-watt-plus TGP, so the GS66 Stealth leaves a lot of potential performance on the table with its low rating. On the upside, the GS66 Stealth’s thin chassis and relatively cool operating temperatures are what you get in exchange for its low-wattage components. Both its GeForce RTX 3080 and its Core i7-10870H CPU topped out in the mid-70-degree C range while gaming. Those are good, low numbers that don’t risk thermal performance throttling.

The keyboard center ran a touch warm, but the rest of the chassis was acceptably cool. This is no small feat for a thin metal notebook. All I can complain about regarding cooling is that the left-side fan (there are three in the GS66 Stealth, one left and two on the right) seemed to be always running, even at idle. While gaming, though, the fans are well-controlled and keep their noise level low enough that you can play games around others without causing a bother.

К нам на тест приехала одна из младших и недорогих, если эти слова вообще применимы к таком ноутбуку, модификаций «Стелса», под номером 10SE-266RU — этот факт определенно радует, так как вы знакомитесь, пожалуй, с самой ходовой моделью в серии. В ноутбуке установлены 6-ядерный Core i7-10750H и 6-гигабайтная мобильная версия GeForce RTX 2060, а также 16 Гбайт оперативной и накопитель на 1 Тбайт. Все MSI GS66 Stealth идут с предустановленной версией Windows 10 — домашней или профессиональной, на выбор. К сожалению, на момент написания статьи тестовой модификации в продаже не было, поэтому я не могу озвучить реальную стоимость этого ноутбука. Известно, что модель 10SFS-249RU с Core i9-10980HK, 32 Гбайт DDR4-2666, терабайтным накопителем, 300-герцевой IPS-матрицей и GeForce RTX 2070 в дизайне Max-Q стоила в мае в среднем 250 000 рублей.
Все GS66 Stealth комплектуются сетевым контроллером Killer E3100 с предельной скоростью передачи данных 2,5 Гбит/с. За беспроводное подключение отвечает процессор Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201, который поддерживает стандарты IEEE 802.11b/g/n/ac/ax с частотой 2,4 и 5 ГГц и максимальной пропускной способностью до 2,4 Гбит/с. А еще данный контроллер поддерживает стандарт Bluetooth 5.1.
В комплекте с тестовым ноутбуком шел довольно компактный внешний блок питания производства компании Chicony мощностью 180 Вт. Кухонные весы показали, что его масса составляет 502 грамма.
Производительность видеокарты
В тестах графики MSI GS66 Stealth 10UH смотрится неплохо, хотя и уступает конфигурации Alienware m15 R4 с видеокартой RTX 3070. В 3DMark Sky Diver ноутбук MSI показывает результат 45 274 балл, где конкурент от Alienware набирает 49 105 очков. Но, модели от Asus и Gigabyte значительно позади.
Я также проверил способности устройства в играх. В Far Cry 5 и Rise of the Tomb Raider есть встроенные тесты производительности. В первой, с разрешением 1080p и максимальными настройками, GS66 Stealth был способен обеспечить 110 fps. Это чуть хуже Alienware m15 R4 (114 fps) и примерно на том же уровне, что и Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED XC (112 fps).

Battery life
There’s a 99.9 Wh battery inside the GS66 Stealth, the largest legally allowed on a notebook, and that translates in fair runtimes on a charge, as long as you use the laptop in the Hybrid mode that enables Optimus.
However, keep in mind that the system down not automatically switch the screen to 60 Hz when unplugging the laptop, which you might want to when looking to maximize runtimes, as running it at 240 Hz takes its slight toll.
Here’s what we got on our unit, with the screen’s brightness set at around 120-nits (60%) and 240 Hz refresh:
- 24 W (~4 h of use) – text editing in Google Drive, Silent Mode, screen at 60%, Wi-Fi ON;
- 19 W (~5+ h of use) – 1080p fullscreen video on Youtube in Edge, Silent Mode, screen at 60%, Wi-Fi ON;
- 19.2 W (~5+ h of use) – Netflix fullscreen in Edge, Silent Mode, screen at 60%, Wi-Fi ON;
- 24 W (~4+ h of use) – browsing in Edge, Balanced Mode, screen at 60%, Wi-Fi ON;
- 65 W (~1h 20 min of use) – Gaming – Witcher 3, Extreme Performance Mode, screen at 60%, Wi-Fi ON, no fps limit.
And here’s what happens when switching the screen to 60 Hz:
- 16 W (~6+ h of use) – 1080p fullscreen video on Youtube in Edge, Silent Mode, screen at 60%, Wi-Fi ON;
- 16.2 W (~6+ h of use) – Netflix, fullscreen in Edge, Silent Mode, screen at 60%, Wi-Fi ON.
- 22 W (~4-5 h of use) – browsing in Edge, Balanced Mode, screen at 60%, Wi-Fi ON.
Overall, this GS66 sample required more power than other i7-10750H notebooks in our tests, and thus our runtimes ended up slightly shorter than I expected, given the size of the battery. Other reviews mention better battery life results, so take our findings with a grain of salt.
MSI pairs the laptop with a generic and fairly-compact 230W power-brick, which still weighs around .83 kilos with the included cables in this US version. Refilling the battery takes 2 to 3 hours, and up to 100W of USB-C charging is also supported through the Thunderbolt 3 port with a compatible charger, for the occasions when you might not want to bring along the main power brick.
