Verdict: Walmart Shoppers Can Do Better

You’re not going to get a spectacular screen and a speedy GeForce RTX 3070 or 3080 GPU in an under-$1,000 gaming laptop. However, you can reasonably hope for a decent display and an RTX 3050 Ti, if not an RTX 3060.

Even without those things, the IdeaPad Gaming 3 might fill a niche for bargain hunters if it had a 512GB SSD instead of just 256GB, but, as is, there’s just not much to recommend it. Unless it gets an upgrade or a price cut, we’ll pass.

Дисплей у ноутбука самый простенький. Это 15,6-дюймовая панель TN+film с классическими соотношением сторон 16:9 и частотой обновления 60 Гц, а также с не менее обычным разрешением — Full HD (1920×1080 пикселей). Покрытие, естественно, антибликовое.

Радует, что не поставили HD-экран, а вот матрица TN+film — отнюдь, хотя для бюджетного сегмента это обыденное дело. Яркости хватает для работы в помещении, даже при ярком освещении. Цветопередача не дотягивает до уровня IPS по понятным причинам, контрастность невысокая.

При наклоне экрана изображение инвертируется и цвета искажаются, что характерно для такого рода панелей. Поэтому не рассчитывайте на широкие углы обзора во время работы за ноутбуком, особенно это касается вертикальных отклонений. Сбоку смотреть на дисплей еще терпимо, но при слишком сильном отклонении от обычного угла, изображение тоже будет искажаться.

Непонятно, зачем производитель в промо-материалах говорит про редактирование фотографий и монтаж видео. Если в разрезе разрешения, то да, конечно, интерфейс будет более четким по сравнению с HD-разрешением. Но с цветом работать на таком экране — явно не лучшая идея. Короче говоря — тут установлена обычная заурядная TN-ка со всеми недостатками, как и у многих других ноутбуков из этого ценового диапазона.

Does Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 have WiFi 6?

Most, but not all, IdeaPad Gaming 3 models do have WiFi 6 or 802.11ax 2×2 as it was known. I compared model types and it looks like only the 15ARH05 (82EY) has the WiFi 5 or 802.11ac 2×2 card installed, at least in the U.S.

The WiFi 6 card for the IdeaPad is listed on Lenovo’s website as part number: 01AX798 (Wl Bt 802.11Abgnacax Ax201.ngwg.nv)

Note: 802.11ac 2×2 WiFi only works on the 5GHZ band. 802.11ax 2×2 WiFi works on the 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands with single-stream speeds of 3.5Gbps.

Дизайн, материалы и сборка

Выглядит Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15IIL05 весьма и весьма стильно, при этом в какой-то степени минималистично. Крышка дисплея и рабочая поверхность сделаны под серебристый металл с вертикальной шлифовкой. Несмотря на удачную имитацию вышеперечисленными деталями металлических поверхностей, на деле это пластик. Впрочем, в таком сегменте никто и не ожидал другого.

Решение на самом деле вполне удачное, потому что на такой поверхности очень тяжело оставить какие-либо следы. Их не будет видно, но это не значит, что не придется протирать области соприкосновения ладоней с корпусом. Но повторюсь — сделаны эти поверхности в целом хорошо не только с виду, но и с точки зрения практичности.

Несмотря на такое обилие пластика, немножечко металла здесь всё же есть. На крышке и топкейсе, ближе к правому нижнему углу, есть неглубокие выемки с тисненными логотипами Lenovo. Именно эти панельки уже металлические. Другие менее важные элементы конструкции также сделаны из пластика, но покрытие их уже обычное, шероховатое, окрашенное в черный либо серый цвет. Это рамка вокруг дисплея, деталь с креплением дисплея к топкейсу, все торцы верхней и нижней частей, а также крышка снизу, закрывающая внутренности.

Говоря о рамках вокруг дисплея, их, суммарно, нельзя назвать тонкими. Всё-таки снизу и сверху поля достаточно широкие, чего уже не скажешь про боковые. Раскрыть крышку ноутбука одной рукой невозможно, но вообще она раскрывается на все 180°. Габариты не очень большие, как для 15,6-дюймового ноутбука — 362,2×253,4×19,9, а весит он всего 1,85 кг.

Цвет корпуса именуется как Platinum Grey, а других ярких или же наоборот ещё более строгих расцветок именно у IdeaPad 3 15IIL05 — не бывает. Сборка нормальная, но не идеальная. Немного продавливается клавиатурный блок, а на ровной поверхности ноутбук пошатывается. Правая часть, там где логотип производителя, почему-то находится в несколько подвешенном состоянии.

How To Upgrade SSD In IdeaPad Gaming 3 Laptop

Upgrading the SSD drive in an IdeaPad Gaming 3 laptop is done by removing the back cover and locating the three potential drive locations. Three drive options can be installed in the IdeaPad Gaming 3, a 2.5″ SATA HDD/SSD, an M.2 2242, and an M.2 2280.

The new IdeaPad Gaming 3 Gen 6 models have an improved cooling system and fans, and therefore look different than the picture above. However, the upgrade procedure remains the same.

The two M.2 slots are: PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x4The 2.5″ SATA slot is: SATA 6Gb/s

SSD Upgrade:

Follow these steps to upgrade the SSD drive in your IdeaPad Gaming 3. Best practice is to disconnect the internal battery prior to removing or replacing any component.

1. Make sure the IdeaPad Gaming 3 is turned off and disconnect the A/C adapter.
2. Close the display and turn over the laptop.
3. Remove the 10 screws that secure the back panel in place.
4. Carefully pry up the latches holding the cover in place and remove the back panel. (See diagram above)
5. All three drive locations are on the lower left of the board, just above the battery. (See diagram)
6. Unscrew the existing drive and add your replacement. You can add an M.2 2242 or M.2 2280 in either slot and either an SDD or HDD in the 2.5″ slot.

Note: Remove the M.2 2242 drive and also remove its standoff to add an M.2 2280 drive in its place.

Officially only two drives can be installed at the same time on the IdeaPad Gaming 3 because adding a second M.2 2280 drive physically interferes with the 2.5″ SATA drive. That is, if you add a second M.2 2280 drive it will project over any existing 2.5″ drive, so this is not recommended or supported by Lenovo. Users have done this anyway by adding some padding for the protection of the drive.

Keep something in mind: if you do replace your drive, either clone your current drive or re-install the operating system and all your data and programs. Many drives come with software to help you clone your computer.

Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15IIL05 оснащается двумя стереодинамика мощностью по 1,5 Вт. Они находятся на скошенном торце спереди, то есть звук от поверхности отражается лишь частично. Звучат динамики достаточно громко, но по умолчанию не очень качественно. Я бы даже сказал — плосковато. Низких частот практически нет, объемности не ощущается. В основном лучше всего проработаны средние и высокие частоты.

Но немного выразительнее звук становится при включении Dolby Audio и всё уже становится получше, хоть и всё ещё не дотягивает до уровня более дорогих устройств. В одноименной утилите есть четыре профиля: фильм, музыка, игра, голос и отдельный эквалайзер на 10 полос с дополнительной парой эффектов.

В ноутбуке установлен модуль с поддержкой Wi-Fi 5 — Intel Wireless-AC 9560, естественно с поддержкой двух диапазонов. Также есть Bluetooth 5.0. Оба беспроводных интерфейса работают замечательно, нет проблем ни с сетью, ни с подключением различной беспроводной периферии к Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15IIL05.

Short on Memory and Storage

The IdeaPad Gaming 3 is the AMD-powered sibling of the Intel-based IdeaPad Gaming 3i, which we reviewed here in July 2020. Both are 15.6-inch systems with Full HD (1,920-by-1,080-pixel) screens with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Our test unit, formally known as IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ARH7 (model 82SB0001US), combines a six-core, 3.3GHz (4.5GHz boosted) Ryzen 5 6600H processor with a skimpy 8GB of memory, a skimpier 256GB NVMe solid-state drive (SSD), and an entry-level GeForce RTX 3050 GPU, putting it at a disadvantage to RTX 3050 Ti and RTX 3060 machines.

Clad in Onyx Gray plastic and polycarbonate, the Lenovo measures 0.86 by 14.2 by 12.5 inches. That’s notably deeper than the Nitro 5 (1.06 by 14.1 by 10.7 inches) because of a Legion-like protruding rear block with several ports and blue-accented cooling vents. That said, the IdeaPad is lighter (5.1 versus 5.5 pounds). There’s considerable flex if you grasp the screen corners, though not much if you press the keyboard deck.

Like many low-cost gamers, the IdeaPad Gaming 3 has neither a fingerprint reader nor a face recognition webcam, so you’ll be stuck typing passwords instead of using Windows Hello. The camera is the usual low-rent 720p number, though it has a sliding privacy shutter. The side screen bezels are slim, but the top and bottom bezels are thick. Luckily, the display tilts far back, so finding the optimum viewing angle should be no problem.

As for ports, you’ll find one USB 3.2 Type-A port on either side, as well as an audio jack on the left. Around the back are an HDMI video out, an Ethernet jack, and a USB 3.2 Type-C port, plus the AC adapter socket. This being an AMD rather than Intel system, there’s no Thunderbolt 4 port, though we don’t penalize under-$1,000 laptops for lacking one. Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth take care of wireless connections. An SD or microSD card slot would have been nice, however.

Клавиатурный блок вполне стандартный, какой встречается во многих ноутбуках производителя. Клавиши типичной формы с закруглением снизу, уменьшенный по высоте ряд верхних клавиш и цифровой блок по ширине. Всего клавиатура насчитывает 101 клавишу, две из которых имеют собственный светодиодный индикатор — CapsLock и NumLock. Раскладка в целом обычная: длинные Shift, одноэтажный Enter, но стрелки вверх и вниз — уменьшены по высоте и к этому приходится привыкать.

Клавиатура лишена подсветки, но в работе оказалась вполне нормальной. Ход клавиш четкий, не особо глубокий и мягкий, но быстро набирать текст можно запросто.

Верхний ряд клавиш по умолчанию выполняет специальные функции (управляет устройством), а чтобы воспользоваться стандартными функциями F1-12 можно нажимать их вместе с зажатой Fn. Но если по каким-либо причинам нужно иметь быстрый доступ именно к F-действиям, то всё можно поменять в утилите Lenovo Vantage, выбрав соответствующую настройку в функциях верхнего ряда клавиатуры.

Тачпэд Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15IIL05 относительно компактный, палец неплохо скользит по его покрытию. Но мне показалось, что он по умолчанию недостаточно чувствительный, что легко регулируется в настройках. В остальном нормально — жесты распознает, точность хорошая.

How To Upgrade RAM In IdeaPad Gaming 3 Laptop

Upgrade the memory in your IdeaPad Gaming 3 laptop with DIMM modules in the two RAM slots or add a larger memory module. The RAM is located behind a cover meant to help dissipate heat and is on the center-right of the board. Remember to disconnect the battery first just as a precaution.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 max RAM is 32GB via 2 DIMM slots, which are DDR4 Dual-Channel capable slots.

IdeaPad Gaming 3 Laptop RAM Types

RAM Upgrade Steps:

1. Make sure the IdeaPad Gaming 3 is turned off and disconnect the A/C adapter.
2. Close the laptop display and turn the IdeaPad over.
3. Remove the 10 screws that secure the back panel in place.
4. Carefully pry up the latches holding the cover in place and remove the back panel. (See diagram)
5. The memory modules are in the center-right of the board and are covered with shielding.
6. Remove the heat shielding and the current RAM module.
7. Insert your new RAM module(s) and replace the cover.

Note: Insert the notched end of the memory DIMM into the socket. Press the DIMM in firmly and pivot it down until it snaps into place. Make sure the DIMM is installed firmly in place.

Crucial RAM 16GB DDR4 3200MHz CL22 RAM:

Enter IdeaPad Gaming 3 EUFI/BIOS:Verify the correct amount of installed RAM by turning on the laptop and pressing F2 repeatedly. This takes you into the UEFI/BIOS and displays installed memory.

Новый ноутбук — это не топовое решение. Он получил AMD Ryzen 7 4800H — чип, построенный на микроархитектуре Zen 2. Практически топовое игровое решение, выше только AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS и 4900H.

Процессор неплохо показывает себя в повседневных задачах, что неудивительно. Во многих сценариях он обгоняет даже девятое поколение Intel i9, у которых больший показатель энергопотребления.

А вот карточка ноутбука совсем не топ: тут стоит NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 c 4 ГБ видеопамяти. Что интересно, в продаже такой версии нет: с такой картой идёт версия Ryzen 5, а в версии с Ryzen 7 стоит GTX 1650 Ti. Но в любом случае карточка не новая и под определение «геймерская» она может попасть только если вы играете не в шибко требовательные игры.

В России аналогичная моей версия продаётся со встроенным SSD на 512 ГБ.

Я поиграл в Resident Evil III и GTA V. Что неожиданно для меня, первая игра шла без каких-либо проблем, показывая стабильные 55–70 кадров, а вот «пятёрка» местами подтормаживала, причём даже не на «ультрах». Например, автомобиль, в котором я случайно подлетел и начал в полёте крутиться, слегка подлагивал, и плавная картинка перестала быть таковой. Игра 2013 года! В остальное же время игра постоянно прыгала между 50 и 75 кадрами в секунду.

Даже в самых тяжёлых сценах ноутбук был тих и спокоен. Тут стоит благодарить систему охлаждения, построенную на алюминиевых радиаторах. И это самая простая версия, есть ещё медные радиаторы, а также радиаторы с повышенным количеством лопастей.

Играть на игровом ноутбуке без подключения к розетке — странное решение. Режимы экономии энергии обрезают производительность компьютера, из-за чего та же самая GTA V идёт так, будто бы компьютер больше 15 кадров выдать не способен.

Если же вы работаете за компьютером, то судить о времени работы тоже как-то странно. Например, в ArchiCAD будет одно время работы, в программах пакета Office — другое. В общем, тут стоит батарея ёмкостью 80 Вт·ч. В коробке вы найдёте блок питания на 170 Вт.

Not Up to Lenovo’s Usual Standard

The keyboard is brightly backlit (just in white—don’t look for an RGB rainbow) and has an attractive layout including a numeric keypad and dedicated Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down keys on the top row. Unfortunately, the latter don’t work if you toggle Fn Lock to access top-row brightness and volume controls without holding the Fn key.

We’re generally big fans of Lenovo keyboards but the IdeaPad’s typing feel is more like a tablet’s keyboard cover than an actual laptop. A good-sized, buttonless touchpad glides and taps smoothly but has a chintzy click.

The bottom-mounted speakers produce sound that isn’t very loud but isn’t too bad: it’s somewhat tinny and short on bass, but you can make out overlapping tracks. Nahimic software offers music, movie, gaming, and communication presets and an equalizer, as well as faux surround sound. The 720p webcam captures slightly dim, blurry images. 

Besides Windows 11 Home and a McAfee antivirus trial, there isn’t much preloaded software. Lenovo Vantage lets you choose cooling or fan noise modes, optimize networking traffic for games, and enhance Wi-Fi security. The app also offers lost system recovery and performance tuning services, for $49 and $29 annually, respectively.

The 1080p non-touch screen boasts a 120Hz refresh rate and AMD FreeSync support to fight screen tearing during gameplay. Its rated brightness is a rather dim 250 nits, below the 300 we consider a minimum and 400 we prefer from IPS panels.

Our Datacolor sensor measured it a little higher than that, but it’s still dimly lit and murky—more common in a low-cost Chromebook than a gaming laptop. Contrast and viewing angles are fair but white backgrounds are dingy, and colors are bland and washed out, making fine details unclear.
